What is Music Therapy?


AMTA defines Music Therapy as:

"Music Therapy is the clinical & evidence-based use of music  interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic  relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an  approved music therapy program. Music therapy interventions can address a  variety of healthcare & educational goals:

  • Promote Wellness
  • Manage Stress
  • Alleviate Pain
  • Express Feelings
  • Enhance Memory
  • Improve Communication
  • Promote Physical Rehabilitation"

Who are Music Therapists?

AMTA states that "Music therapists' objectives are to determine and  utilize music therapy approaches that effectively aid in the  restoration, maintenance, and improvement in mental and physical  health.Music therapists believe in the dignity and worth of every  person. They promote the use of music in therapy, establish and maintain  high standards in public service, and require of ourselves the utmost  in ethical conduct". CBMT is the certifying body for Music Therapists: "CBMT is a member of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence. Our Music Therapist-Board Certification (MT-BC) program has been fully  accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies since  1986. As the only certifying board for music therapy, we are committed  to rigorous competency testing. Our accreditation ensures our  unconditional compliance with stringent testing and measurement  standards". (https://www.cbmt.org/about/)
